DeSoto Rural Fire Protection District Board Members Take Oath of Office

Three of the five members of the Board of Directors were sworn in to fill their terms in office at the regular meeting of the Board that was held on Wednesday, April 8th.   Because the County Clerk’s office was able to certify the election so quickly, the District was able to swear in Joe Valle and Tom Muzzey for new six year terms and Tammie Scullin for the unexpired two year term.  All three were incumbents.   Directors Valle and Muzzey had no opposition in the election so they were not included on the ballot.  Director Scullin kept her board seat with 53.95% of the vote.  Challenger Robert (Bobby) Bonnarens garnered 45.69%.   The race required the District to pay $4,447 for legal notices and polling place expenses to the County Clerk.

The Board also realigned specific duties of the members.  Mark Landau was voted to Chair the Board.  Other positions are Vice-Chair Mark Mahn, Secretary Joe Valle, Treasurer Tammie Scullin and Tom Muzzey was voted as Committee Chair.

Two Additional Fire Stations Added in 2009

Construction of Station Four at 3200 Flucom Road and of Station Six at 10530 State Road WW was completed in 2009.  Both stations were built mostly with volunteer labor from the fire fighters in an effort to benefit the most people for the least amount of money.  Anyone that lives within five miles of these stations should receive a considerable reduction in insurance costs if their insurance company uses Insurance Services Office (ISO) classification ratings.  Those areas have been reduced from a class nine to a class six.  Residents should contact their insurance agent to make them aware of these upgrades to the District's response capabilities.

The District has also purchased property near Hardin and Upper Blackwell Roads for a seventh station.  At this time, we are unable to afford a seventh station or place paid fire fighters in the newly built stations.  The original plan developed in 2005 had considered asking the voters to approve an increase after the two stations were built but in January 2009 the Board voted unanimously to postpone discussion of a ballot issue.

Board Passed a Resolution to Support the Highway 21 Task Force Efforts

The Task Force is currently working hard to gain approval of funding to purchase right-of-way from Highway B to Highway 110 and to realign the intersection of Highway 110 and the current Highway 21.
